Despite his austere lifestyle, Devanathan Gurukkal enjoyed certain forms of entertainment. He was an avid reader of classical Tamil literature and would often recite poems from the ancient Tamil canon. He was also a skilled musician and would play the veena, a traditional Indian instrument.
